Sazenka, which embraces the notion of wakon kansai, is a magnificent union of Japanese spirit with Chinese learning that should be celebrated. Located in a quiet residential area in Minami Azabu, Sazenka is hidden below a canopy of swaying bamboo trees and surrounded by greenery. The restaurant, which is widely regarded as the focal point of Tokyo’s foreign population, is located on a former diplomatic estate and is designed to resemble a tranquil, traditional Chinese tea house.
At the entryway, the multilingual staff extends a warm welcome in Japanese, Chinese, English, or French to all visitors. The inside of the large main room is both contemporary and traditional in style, with both linear and circular lines being used. The polished wooden furniture and warm-colored lighting create an appealing ambiance, and the huge windows help to generate a feeling of movement in the space. There are also private rooms available for visitors, particularly families with young children, who want a more private environment.
The restaurant, which is run by a young and brilliant team, has swiftly gained recognition for its brilliance, earning two Michelin stars within a year of its establishment. Chief chef Tomoya Kawata, a specialist in both Chinese and Japanese culinary traditions, has curated the bicultural and unique food on the premises. Kawata collaborates closely with Ryoji Hayashi, the company’s CEO, who brings a diverse and distinct set of skills to the table in the hotel industry.
“Everything about the restaurant has to be of the same caliber as our food,” adds Hayashi, who is also a professional chef himself.
Every nook and cranny of the restaurant is adorned with a valuable collection of vintage artwork and dinnerware. In particular, a big dish that hangs on the staircase leading up to the second story is noteworthy. The porcelain item, which is embellished with a depiction of a dragon, is sourced from Jingdezhen, China’s porcelain capital. Beautiful kutaniyaki plates, a form of Japanese pottery adorned with blue brushstrokes, are used for the place settings at the tables.
