Azabu Kadowaki, in the words of its designer, serves up “a supper to remember” with every course. Chef Toshiya Kadowaki turns delicacies such as white truffles and shark fins into whole new culinary experiences by fusing innovative concepts with ancient methods, shattering traditional expectations in the process. It’s no surprise that so many gourmands continue to return to this renowned business, year after year, desiring to be delighted with every taste.

A structure with traditional kurobei walls constructed of black painted timber may be found on a quiet backstreet in Azabu, tucked away on a quiet side street. As you pass through the gorgeous entryway, you will be met with a stone statue of a fox, who represents Inari, the Shinto deity of rice and wealth, and who serves as his messenger. As Kadowaki explains, “I discovered that the Juban Inari, a goddess associated with wealth, is the deity that protects this location.” The Inari’s day always starts with him bringing some sake and rice to the restaurant to start the day.

One of the highlights of the restaurant’s design is an excellent hinoki wood counter that seats just six people. The pleasant mood is created by the warmth of the light wood and the subdued light from the lighting. There are also two private rooms with elaborate decorations such as nijiri-guchi, small square entrances to a tea room, and a third private room with a fireplace. Set in a magnificent traditional setting, you will immediately feel relaxed and at ease.

Behind the big counter is an open charcoal grill, where you can see the chef demonstrate his culinary prowess while preparing your meal. Immediately next to it are rows of akaraku pottery, which ranges in hue from brilliant yellow bowls to deep green plates. In Tokyo, it is difficult to come across a collection of Kyoto crockery of this caliber. During the year 2006, the restaurant moved to a larger location. Despite the fact that it was 1.5 times the size in terms of square footage, he only installed four more chairs since he wanted to utilize the extra space for the kitchen. He explains that he want a perfect kitchen so that his workers could concentrate on providing the greatest meals possible. A veteran-trained workforce at Azabu Kadowaki is devoted to providing excellent service for all of its customers.

Having been blessed with excellent intuition and thorough instruction, Kadowaki’s culinary abilities are world-class. He has a natural talent for inventing whole new methods of cooking. Not only are his distinctive meals delectable, but they are also full of surprises. Despite the restaurant’s well-earned reputation, he maintains a humble demeanor and stays committed to his core principle of putting the needs of his customers first. This is possibly the key to its long-term popularity, as seen by the fact that gourmands return again and again.

“Being a chef is the best profession in the world since it allows you to make people happy in only two hours,” he claims. Anyone who has a taste of his food would agree that it is delicious.
