Occasionally, it seems as if cooks provide a tasting menu just because they are required to do so. They check the appropriate boxes for each of the courses, but there is no compelling reason for them to be served in a tasting style rather than a la carte. Mirazur’s cuisine, created by Chef Maru Colagreco, is the polar antithesis of this. Each course on his tasting menu is meant to take you on a journey through his home garden and neighboring terroir. This is a dinner that is an experience in and of itself. In addition to the gorgeous backdrop, the cuisine is inventive and distinctive, while also drawing inspiration from the many historic restaurants in which Colagreco learned. In my experience, there have been few meals when the idea is as cohesive as it is here, from the location, to the cuisine, and even a post-meal stroll to the restaurant’s garden. Even while this was not the finest-tasting lunch of the year (it was quite nice, but I still like more traditional fare), it was one of the best meals of the whole year.
