I had high hopes since I had dined at a number of Michelin-starred establishments. At au 14 Fevrier in St. Amour, chef Masafumi Hamano well surpassed all of my expectations, and I was completely taken aback by the meals, which are as visually stunning as they are delectably tasty.
In fact, every meal was excellent, and each one is a sophisticated and beautiful marriage of many different components, but each one is always built around a familiar basis of foods such as crab or monkfish and foie gras or iberian pig to give the dish its foundation. Dishes were discreetly changed to accommodate food intolerances or allergies without sacrificing flavor or texture.
The wine pairings (which were primarily white while I was there) were fantastic, and included surprises such as an outstanding Austrian Langenlois that I had never had before.
Act quickly before they get three stars…
